Since July 4, 2024, anyone 18 or older who may legally possess a firearm can carry a concealed handgun in Louisiana without a permit, under Act 1 of the 2024 Second Extraordinary Session. The optional concealed handgun permit is still issued by Louisiana State Police to applicants 21 and older who complete the required training. Many owners keep the permit for travel, because it is honored in dozens of other states. Places such as schools, courthouses and secured areas of airports remain off limits with or without a permit, so read the posted rules.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries sets deer seasons by deer hunting area, and the parish you hunt in decides which calendar applies. Most areas run archery from early fall, then primitive firearms and modern firearms segments from late October or November into January, with still-hunt and dog-hunt periods differing by area. Rifles, shotguns with slugs or buckshot, handguns and muzzleloaders are all used. Wildlife management areas have their own shorter schedules and permits, so check the current LDWF regulations for your area before opening day.
